Fire marshal sifts through Christie's ashes

NEWELL - A state fire marshal investigator and the Newell Fire Department will spend another day sifting through the remains of Christie's Cabaret today.

The club was destroyed by a blaze early Monday.

John Oliver, assistant state fire marshal and investigator, arrived on the scene of the fire at about 10 a.m. Monday. Scott Wilson, Newell fire chief, said he expected the investigation to continue at least one more day and maybe more.

"He (Oliver) sifted through the rubble most of the day after he got there," said Wilson.

Oliver talked to operators of the club and a number of other people who came forward to offer information, said Wilson. Smoldering trees behind the destroyed club brought the Newell Fire Department back out to the site Monday evening.

The Christie's Cabaret in Newell is one of 12 chain clubs in five states by that name. The Newell establishment's article's of incorporation, as reported by Secretary of State's office, listed Bill Beshara, 120 Columbia Drive, Chester, and Edward Beshara, 3447 Logan Way, Youngstown, as the incorporators.

The West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration has the Besharas, as well as Earl Lundy and the chain's parent company, FST Inc., listed on the establishment's liquor license under it's old name of Tiffany's Cabaret. A representative from J. Dog Media, Christie's advertising firm, reported advertising for the Christie's in Chester and several of the other 11 establishments was canceled last week.

Seven fire departments were called to the scene of the fire at about 6 a.m. Monday after a security guard at the NewChem plant across state Route 2 saw the fire. Wilson said once the water carried by the various fire department trucks was spent, a lack of water became a big problem.

It took about two hours for fire crews to get close enough to spray down the inside of the burning structure.
