Four departments respond to house fire

By MICHAEL D. McELWAIN, Review Staff Writer

NEW CUMBERLAND - A structure fire brought a response from four area departments Thursday afternoon.

A fire broke out at a residence at the intersection of Hardins Run Road and Wylie Ridge Road at approximately 3 p.m.

"We responded quickly, and when we got here, flames were coming through the roof," Roger Stewart said. Stewart is the fire chief at the [New Manchester] Volunteer Fire Department.

"The fire was fully involved, and we had to get it under control," Stewart said.

The fire burned through the power line leading to the home, Stewart said, and had notified the electric company of the situation.

The fire was difficult to battle due in part to the weakened floor structure. Stewart was concerned in allowing firefighters in the building for fear of the floor collapsing and sending firefighters into the basement.

Approximately 25 firefighters were on the scene and represented volunteers from New Cumberland, Oakland, Newell and New Manchester departments.

Stewart said that this was the first major structure fire for [New Manchester] this winter.

"We've been to chimney fires and that type of thing, but nothing like this," Stewart said.

No one was in the residence at the time of the fire, and it was unclear to fire officials if the building was being used as a home or a storage building.

Since the investigation is at an early stage, Stewart had no idea who owned the home. He did say, however, that a full investigation will take place.
