NEW MANCHESTER - A brush fire on View Point Lane off of
Hardins Run Road took firefighters more than three hours to
get under control. According to New Manchester Volunteer
Fire Department Deputy Chief Rick Jones, a man was using a
match to melt the end of his fishing line around 3 p.m. Sunday
afternoon when the match fell from his hand.
When the match dropped, the man reportedly went back to his
house and tried to get water, hoping to get the fire under
control. When he returned, the fire had grown too big for him
to handle.
Jones said the fire covered between five and 10 acres, but
an exact number was difficult to estimate because of the
terrain.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control around
6 p.m., with windy weather giving them some difficulty.
Ten firefighters from the New Manchester Volunteer Fire
Department were assisted with mutual support from Newell, New
Cumberland, Oakland District and Hanover Township fire
departments.
No one was injured. |
