The City of Weirton and the New
Manchester Volunteer Fire Department are enacting a new
agreement that the two communities hope will be able to
improve fire service to both areas.
During its recent
meeting, Weirton City Council unanimously approved a new
mutual aid agreement with the New Manchester VFD, which will
allow each entity to call on each other if assistance is
needed in fighting fires.
The agreement was requested
by New Manchester, Weirton Fire Chief Kessler Cole
said.
Ward 5 Councilman George Kondik asked for an
explanation of the benefits each community would receive
through the agreement.
Cole said one of the areas the
city would be receiving assistance with is in the event there
is a water shortage or an interruption in the water supply in
Weirton. If this were to take place, Cole said New Manchester
would be willing to make its tanker truck available to help
supply water to Weirton.
New Manchester, in turn, would
be able to call upon the Weirton Fire Department to supply
additional personnel, most likely through the citys volunteer
division, if any help was needed while fighting
fires.
Cole said the agreement was reviewed by all
parties involved and agreed to.
We looked over what
was offered, Cole said.
The Weirton Fire Department
currently has mutual aid agreements with several other area
departments, including those from Hanover Township, Pa.,
Colliers and Steubenville, Ohio.
The new agreement will
go into affect July 1.
